I agree with most of your thesis here. "Activism" in the western democratic sense is either a privileged activity, a co-opting of potentially meaningful solidarity and engagement, or both. The fall began when people with legitimate concerns about legitimate social issues allowed themselves to be labeled as "activists" by status quo. That invented categorization, wielded as perjorative by status quo power, destroyed any legitimate social basis of any individual or group it was applied to (ref. "Culture Jam," by Kalle Lasn).

The miss here however is the part where technology will save us from technology. Or at least, it contradicts the nearby claim that the world as we know it is over. Because "the world as we know it" in terms of social mythology is that technology will save us from technology. It can't both be over, and not over.

Systemically, from outside the religion of high technology, a mars colony and fusion or solar energy beamed from space are equally fantasies, products of our cultural blind spots.
