"Many violent men seem like “nice, God-fearing, guys,” and those who know them are surprised that they could have committed such violent acts."
I am always puzzled by people invoking "God-fearing" in relation with "nice," or any other positive human qualities.
The histories of "God-fearing" people are filled with men carrying out brutality, slavery, misogyny, war, genocide...often in the name of the "God" they fear .
Why is it a surprise that people who live in fear of a disembodied, patriarchal, monotheistic, abstract, vengeful "God" exhibit these qualities themselves?
