Spot on. I am old enough to have been a geeky kid reading Popular Science and Popular Mechanics mags in the early 70's - and watching "The Jetsons." When in recent decades I hear someone gushing over the latest predicted cool future technology, I invoke essentially what you've said here. Didn't go there, didn't do that! And not likely to happen this time either. Or at least, not likely to have only beneficial outcomes.

What people miss is our cultural context and how that affects consequences of any such gee-whiz idealism. There's a complete disconnect between the fascination with shiny toys and the social consequences. For example "labor saving" devices thru the decades are primarily about saving business owners from having to pay for human labor, so more 'profit' can go in their pockets. What happens to the human laborers is not even an afterthought.
