The irony is, the USA mythology of the 'frontier' and the gunslinging cowboys and the 'minutemen' and so on is almost entirely that - a myth. Very few people - especially relative to now - had guns during the colonization of north America by Europeans. If they did, it was a hunting rifle for getting food. Cowboys had guns to shoot native animals that wanted to eat the colonial livestock they were herding (and also to hunt for food). "Gunslinger" shoot-outs were very rare - except in Hollywood movies.
You can research the original intention, and actual implementation, of the "well regulated militia" and the second amendment. It has mostly nothing to do with the stories that contemporary adolescent adult white males base their gun obsession on. The only 'freedom' they want to defend is their ability to oppress everyone else.
