We're debating the wrong issues far beyond what's claimed explicitly in this summary of Goldin and related work. There is a lot to unpack just in the parenthetical aside that this participation curve is not found globally. What is found globally, and how is it different in different cultures, climates, demographics? In different eras? I suspect we could learn a lot from those details.
